No stages, no amps, and 30 guests: The backcountry’s most intimate music tradition reaches capacity at Bell 2 Lodge for 2027.
VERNON, BC, CANADA, March 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Last Frontier Heliskiing is celebrating Heligrass, its annual event combining world-class heliskiing with intimate acoustic performances from Grammy-winning artists, as the 2027 edition heads toward another sold-out year. What started as a grassroots experiment at Bell 2 Lodge has become one of the most unique events in the ski world.
Now entering its eighth year, Heligrass brings together approximately 30 guests and a curated group of professional musicians for a week at Bell 2 Lodge, located deep in Northern British Columbia near the Alaska border. During the day, guests and musicians ski together in small groups of four across Last Frontier’s 10,100 km² tenure, the largest single heliskiing area on the planet. In the evening, the musicians perform stripped-down acoustic sets in the lodge with no amplification, no lighting rigs, and no setlist.
The event launched in 2019 when members of the String Cheese Incident, a Colorado-based band with roots in ski town culture, agreed to come play at Bell 2 Lodge. They brought 30 friends, played unplugged after dinner, and a tradition was born. Since then, the musician roster has expanded to include Grammy-winning acts such as the Infamous Stringdusters, with performances curated by Music Director Mark Morris, a professional skier and touring musician.
“Heligrass is by far the coolest thing I could even think of,” said Morris. “Going heli skiing all day and then adding the music component in such an intimate setting. I don’t think you’d need to change a thing about it.”
The format has remained deliberately unchanged since its first year. Performances are entirely improvisational, with musicians reading the energy of the room and building each evening’s set in real time. Throughout the week, guests and musicians eat together, ski together, and share helicopters. By the time the music starts each evening, everyone in the room already knows each other.
“You’re not looking at a screen. It’s not a typical concert environment. You’re completely immersed,” said Mike Mills, a returning Heligrass guest. “If you love skiing and you love music, this is an experience that dreams are made of.”
While the 2027 edition is full, Last Frontier Heliskiing continues to see strong demand for the small-scale gathering. Interested guests are encouraged to register for the Heligrass waitlist and to contact the team at ski@lastfrontierheli.com.
